Hello from Anymark

Most Markdown editors want you to move in. They have a vault, a workspace, a sync service, a graph. They are lovely for notes you write yourself. They are useless for the file that just arrived: the Word contract, the Excel export from the accountant, the PDF statement from the bank, the scan someone photographed on a kitchen table.

Anymark starts from the other end. It is a desktop app that behaves like a word processor: double-click a file, it opens. If the file is not Markdown, it is converted into Markdown on your computer, shown to you as editable rich text, and the original is left exactly where it was. Save, and you have a .md file beside it.

That is the whole idea. A few things follow from it.

It has to handle the files people actually send. Word 97 .doc files from 2004. RTF from a government portal. A PDF with three columns and a table that has no ruling lines. A 1099-K that is a picture of a form with the numbers typed on top. Scans fed into the copier upside down. Every one of these is in our test suite because every one of them turned up in real life.

It has to work offline. OCR runs on your machine, in 21 languages. Nothing is uploaded. The app has no account, and the only time it talks to our server is to start the trial or check a licence.

It has to be a tool you buy, not rent. Lifetime licence, $9.99. Updates included, major versions included. We would rather have a product people recommend than a subscription they resent.

The seven-day trial is the full app. Open the worst PDF you have and tell us how it went.
